Although intriguing, so many of them painted remarkably similar pictures of Black males. So much appeared to be missing; historical context, social and cultural context, variation, diversity, and the voices of Black males themselves. This experience sent me searching through library databases for books and articles related to Black males. The available body of literature on Black males was like an exciting and provocative box of puzzle pieces. But alas, it was as if half the pieces were missing. Part of my existence I owe to my father, yet there are few reflections of men like my father in the vast body of literature on Black males. What emerged was an awareness of the need for a systematic approach to studying the lives of Black men and boys. The process of developing the systemic approach laid out in this text was aided by many conversations with my family, friends, colleagues, and students. This book is dedicated to these men.

Black men are heavy users of mobile technology, so why are they not pursuing careers in this field? This is the question that researchers at Pennsylvania State are investigating with a grant they received from the National Science Foundation as reported by The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. Lynette Kvasny and Eileen Trauth, both professors of information sciences and technology at Penn State are conducting interviews with Black men on the path toward careers in Information Technology in order to determine which factors encouraged them to make this decision. Kvasny says. The researchers hope that this investigation will lead to an online community of support for Black men in IT. We are looking forward to finding out the conclusions of this study as it is extremely relevant to our work with the College Bound Brotherhood. We will stay tuned!

Omar Neal often thinks back on the calculated betrayal of hundreds of Black men and how it still shapes so much about this rural Alabama community. He remembers the mechanic who went from house to house fixing cars and the sharecropper who lived off a narrow dirt road. He thinks too of his uncle Freddie Lee Tyson, a carpenter, and how the betrayal shaped his life. The name of the town evokes feelings of both pride and pain — for its legendary Black airmen and for the infamous government-backed healthcare study.
